European Inter-Lake Network: Tisza Lake (Hungary)
Located in the east of the country, Tisza Lake was created artificially by the construction of a dam on the river of the same name, a tributary of the Danube. It consists of a series of aquatic environments covering 12,500 ha, including water areas and wetlands. Part of the site is a reserve (administered by the Hortobágy Natural Park and listed as a World Heritage Site), whereas other parts are used for tourism and aquatic sports. Recreational fishing is practised as well. The dam has a hydroelectric function, as well as that of flood control. It also facilitates agricultural irrigation.
The Tisza Lake is represented within the inter-lake partnership by the President of the Council of Development of Tisza Lake.
